Journey through Key Notes of “Kaun Mera"

                                                            Kaun Mera by Papon

When one hears the song “Kaun Mera” by Papon for the first time, it seems it will tend to have a sedative effect. But this piece of music has the capability to not only reduce you to a calm state of mind but also a state of heightened emotional awareness.

It all begins with an initial flurry of notes. Don’t be misled by this initial gush of musical winds picking up a few leaves, it will smoothly draw to confident & bold stop. Then begins the story of a few Indianised blues chords shuffling and walking with the support of musical anklets and taking you right into the beginning of the song. At this point, the vocals of Papon start spinning the magical world. The vocals and the subtle music in the backdrop are so much intertwined that it would need a trained ear to discern the two. The effect of the pinch of the few notes between the initial vocal snippets ripples right through the verses. It is within the same para that begins with a precarious question riding on a piece of tenuous music that Papon decides to go to higher octaves valiantly vocalizing the helplessness of the emotional self. But immediately after this, he retracts to the initial tonality, rhetorically repeating the initial question but this time in a much more submissive manner.

The lyrics softly bind the crests and troughs of optimism and pessimism of a pursuant lover. The musical harmonies in the break time between vocals seem to be teasing the listener as he craves for the singer to complete the unfinished words, to bring to life the unspoken thought in subsequent stanzas. The silent clamors of a lost soul with a clear sense of purpose is what comes to the fore quite clearly.

Despite the pitch-perfect tones, Papon’s creative voice texture manipulations and smooth transitions through the ebb and flows make it all look so unprepared &  instinctive. Overall the music, the vocals have created a riot of subsuming harmonies by not only using sound but the well-placed silence as well. I say “well done!”
